Waunita Hot Springs has one of the hottest (2nd ranked) spring discharges (77 to 80 oC) in Colorado and is reported to have a cumulative natural discharge in excess of 1,500 gpm (Pearl, 1979). The area is located on private surface and mineral lands adjacent to the Gunnison National Forest about 35 miles east of Gunnison, Colorado in Gunnison County in Township 49 North Range 4 East and sections 10 and 11. In addition, the area is adjacent to a Western Area Power Authority (WAPA) 230 kv powerline and both the quartz and cation (Na-K-Ca-Mg) chemical geothermometers predict reservoir temperatures in excess of 130 oC (Pearl, 1979), making the area a prime Colorado prospect for small-scale binary geothermal power production.
